What Is The Perfect Size for the Cage?
Hamsters are small animals which, night after night, travel many hundreds of metres in search for food in the wild. Therefore, in addition to the possibility of regular exercise inside the house or in an outdoor enclosure, hamsters need a cage that is not too small and has enough free space to roam around.
A perfect hamster cage or wooden nagarium has a space of at least 0.5m² and several floors to provide extra usable space and ensure variety. Depending on the size of the hamster, the distance between the bars should also be considered - if the bars are more than 8mm apart, the little inhabitant may slip through!

Where Should the Hamster Cage Be Placed?
Hamsters are considered nocturnal animals, which makes them noisy cohabitants during the night time. Hence, bedrooms are rarely considered as suitable cage locations. Nonetheless, the night-time lifestyle also means that hamsters need peace and silence during the day. For that reason, a child's room is not the right place for the cage either. Hallways and balconies are only suitable in temperatures between 18°C to 26°C. Otherwise, there is a danger of the hamster hibernating or overheating.
Altogether, it is best to place a hamster cage in a quiet room, such as a study room, not too close to a heater and away from direct sunlight.

What Needs to Go Into A Hamster Cage?
A perfect hamster cage has several floors, which should be designed differently to avoid boredom. The shelves should be made of a flat surface such as wood.
Since hamsters like to dig holes and create cave systems with several chambers, it is important to fill the cage with enough litter, bedding and straw for digging. Plenty of accessories are also recommended to urge the hamster to move.
The most important accessories are:
- bowls for dry and wet food
- a water bowl or bottle
- a small cabin or house, hammocks and hanging beds
- exercise wheels, bridges and stairs, tunnels and dens
- a digging space (e.g. a tower filled with hay)

Cleaning the Hamster Cage
Very important: do NOT use any household cleaning products!
Warm water without detergent is perfectly sufficient to remove dirt and urine. Bowls and drinking bottles should be regularly cleaned with hot water. Dirty bedding and food remains should be replaced at least once a week. It is also best to always leave a "safe" area so that there is a space for your hamster to hide while cleaning. When to clean the cage depends on the sleeping schedule of your hamster - after all, no one wants to be woken up by their house being turned upside down.
