What is Catnip?

Many cats are fond of the odour of catnip. Botanically, the mint belongs to the Lamiaceae family. The plant gets its name from its strong attraction to sexually mature cats. The reaction of cats varies depending on genetics and is only pronounced in about 50% of cats. It's not just the house cat, but also big cats that are drawn to it. Rats, on the other hand, are said to be repelled by the odour.

Effects of Catnip

What exactly triggers the effect of catnip is still not fully understood. It is suspected that the scent of the plant is associated with the mating ritual by the animals. This scent acts intoxicatingly on most cats. They roll around in the mint and are more relaxed. Additionally, catnip enhances the play instinct of the furry friends, making even generally sluggish animals more active for a while. However, the mint does not work on kittens and old cats. Particularly in uncomfortable situations, such as transport to the vet, a cat can be lured into the carrier with a bit of catnip.

Many cat owners wonder if catnip is toxic to their furry friends. To date, no side effects or damage are known. Therefore, the mint can be used without worry. However, it is not advisable to expose the furry friends to the scent of catnip every day. Once a week is completely sufficient and prevents overstimulation. The cat should naturally be in a healthy state when using the mint.

Growing Catnip

Just like for the cats, mint is extremely practical in your own garden as well, because it keeps insects and pests away thanks to a special active ingredient. The plant is relatively undemanding and robust. It grows best in sunny locations. Catnip grows in almost any soil. After the first bloom, the mint can be trimmed a bit to ensure a second bloom.
